Life Cycle KWL

We are welcoming Spring today with a new science unit. We have begun our annual Life Cycle unit with the arrival of chicken eggs. We have placed them in the incubator at 100 degrees and are waiting patiently for the arrival of baby chicks in 21 days. We have just begun the unit so here are some things we Know and some things we Want to Know. We will follow up later with things we have Learned.

Here is what we know so far:
  • they hatch from eggs
  • they grow up after they hatch out of the eggs
  • they mom has to sit on the eggs so they can be warm and crack up
  • they can not fly
  • it takes 21 days for the eggs to hatch
  • they start in the egg super small and then they get bigger and bigger until they turn into a chicken
  • if you find and egg with a red dot in it just throw it away
  • not only chickens and birds can lay eggs
  • "chickens aren't the only ones"
  • the eggs fall out of the mom
  • chickens are birds
  • always when chickens hatch out they lay down because they are tired
  • when chickens hatch out they are wet
  • chickens don't only hatch from incubators they hatch from nests
  • reptiles lay eggs too

Where is what we want to know:
  • Do they ever get a little hot or cold?
  • Are reptiles cold blooded when the reptiles are in the egg?
  • How does the chicken hatch out of the egg with moving?
  • Can baby chicks lay tiny eggs sometimes?
  • Do the chicks sleep like humans?
  • Do chicks look like chickens?
  • Do the chicks sleep like their mother?
  • Do chicks sleep with one eye open?
  • Do chicks eat like their mother?
  • Do the eggs warm up in the nest?
  • Do all fish lay eggs?
Stay tuned for things learned...

I See, I Think, I Wonder - 2014 Olympics

I See:

  • fireworks
  • thousands of people
  • something on fire in the middle
  • people shooting fireworks
  • a light
  • a lot of people cheering
  • 100 blue lights
  • Purple Lines
  • the stadium
  • the red sky
  • sparks
  • fire coming out of rocket things on the outside
  • sparklers
  • black in the sky
  • tv cameras
  • purple on the ground

I think:
  • there are 5,000 people there
  • this is in Memphis
  • those things in the sky are jumbo trons
  • it is Russia
  • there are 10 million people watching on TV
  • in the circle people are ice skating
  • it just started because the fire just shot
  • there are some people standing on stage
  •  that this is in Moscow, Russia
  • the people on the stage came out from the sides
  • that this is the first game of the Olympics
  • they are running laps around the hill
  • that the little blue lines on the side are bleachers
  • the fireworks are dynamite
  • it is night time
 I wonder:
  • if they celebrate Valentine's Day
  • if all those people are watching guys ice skate
  • if they are skiing there
  • if that is a special light in the middle
  • if all the people are watching the guys riding their snow boards
  • if some people are cheering for the other team and some people are not
  • if there is lightening in the sky
  • if the fire ball in the middle is shooting the fireworks out
  • if they are celebrating something
  • if they dark stuff is black goo that they put in the air
  • if that is steam in the sky coming from the fireworks
  • how many laps they do when they are racing
  • if the performance is one hour
  • if the stadium is 1000 feet wide
  • if everyone in the USA is watching
  • if they are using real fire
  • if this is in Chicago
  • if they are 572 people in the stadium
  • if they speak a language
  • if they are doing the National Anthem
  • if there are 500,000 people there

What is the weather like today...

The weather changes from week to week here in the South. This time last week it was 8 degrees and we were hoping for snow. Just a week later the high for the day is almost 50 degrees warmer! With all the crazy weather on our brains the boys have decided that we should blog about our favorite kind of weather and why.

Dudley - Fall weather because I like to play with the leaves on the ground.
Jackson - Summer weather because I can go outside and go to the basketball court next to my house.
Sohum - I like icy weather because when the lake is icy I can go skating on it.
Carter - Snowy because I get to throw snow balls at my neighbors.
Stephen - Snowy because we don't have to go to school
Will - I like snowy because we don't have to go to school and also fall because it is really beautiful
Chris - I like snowy weather because I get to make a snow man.
Frank - I like snowy weather because you get to build snow men and snow angels.
Renat - I like rainy weather because you get to walk in the rain.
Reese - Spring weather so we can play outside.
Kevin - Super hot weather because we get to go swimming.
Madoc - My favorite kind of weather is summer because you can go to the Sugar Shak at Rosemary Beach.
Michael - Sunny weather because I can drive my 4-wheeler after school
Aadil - Warm weather because I get to go outside and practice basketball.
Noah - I like summer weather because I don't have to go to school for a long time and I get to have some cousins over.
Craig - Super sunny because I can play with my friends and play basketball.
Witt - Super snowy because then there is a lot of snow to start a snowball fight and you will be in that spot for a long time because there will be a lot of snow to pick up.
Whit - Summer weather because I get to go to our lake house.
Reid - Summer weather because I get to go to my land.
